New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts
Transformation of the city’s oldest warehouse, combining its traditional architecture with modern design, into a nationally-recognized professional arts training high school
NOCCA is housed in the historic Lower Cotton Press building, located on the Mississippi River in the Faubourg Marigny, a historic neighborhood adjacent to the French Quarter.
The design retrofitted two of the oldest warehouse structures as entry and studio space that borders a courtyard and a gateway to the school from Chartres Street. Adjacent to these historical structures, the design added a modern three-story elliptical building that steps up toward the curve of the Mississippi River, which can be seen rolling downriver from the school’s windows. The NOCCA campus includes a 300-seat dance theater and a 200-seat experimental and recital theater. The campus also includes a library, classrooms, galleries, and studios to accommodate NOCCA’s many creative arts programs
