ModGun’s innovative design was geared toward sustainability, affordability, and preservation of traditional architectural styles in order to facilitate the return of New Orleans residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The design, initiated by Robert Tannen of Creative Industry, was further developed by renowned architect Frank Gehry and Manning. The resulting collaborative effort was an ecologically conscientious design based on a 14’ square building block with 12’ ceiling heights. The interstitial space was created by shifting and rotating the adjacent modules, providing a naturally ventilated “porch” space. The porch also serves as the main circulation of the house and provides comfortable outdoor zones reminiscent of courtyard spaces prevalent throughout New Orleans.
