Fifth District Police Station
Despite its modest cost, the Fifth District Police Station's design reflects the City of New Orleans’ commitment to design excellence. The two-story, brick masonry structure is located in a residential area of New Orleans’ Ninth Ward. The exterior design is evocative of a turn-of-the-century Viennese building with articulated, multi-color brickwork. The building’s footprint is formed by the intersection of a semi-circular form and a rectangular form.
The entry to the station is framed by a large limestone wall that integrates the work of a local artist under the city’s percent for art program. The gridded geometry of the aluminum and glass doors is reflected in glass block wall panels that form large windows in the semi-circular atrium. Clerestory windows above add to the light flooding the atrium, while the glass block filters views. A curving staircase leads to administrative offices on the second floor.
