The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas’ roof was damaged due to wind and wind-driven rain from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In addition to the roof damage, the exterior envelope above the numerous planes of the roof was also damaged and was a contributing factor to leaks and moisture intrusions. Manning Architects assisted the owner by identifying these items early in the development of roofing construction documents. Manning provided documentation to address these issues and identified other items with the roof that were not included in original FEMA Project Worksheet or Grant. Due to our findings, documentation, and follow through, we were able to increase FEMA’s assistance from $1.2 million to $2.5 million. Through coordination with the owner, contractor, FEMA, and GOHSEP, we were able to design a water-tight facility beyond just the replacement of the roof. The new roof was brought up to current codes, design pressures, and best practices for roof replacement. Additionally, Manning worked at identifying repairs and replacement for interior work that was damaged from the original moisture intrusions. Through our coordination efforts, the aquarium and the specific requirements of the exhibits remained open and functional throughout construction.
